The Dunbar Garden was established in 1992 to make a difference in childrens' lives through the lessons taught in the garden. This project began with Pratt Remmel, the Little Rock School District, and Arkansas Urban Gardening Educational Resources (AUGER) and a generous donation from our member, Helen Porter, working with the students of Dunbar Middle School and Gibbs Elementary School. All students actively participate in planting and maintaining the two acre outdoor classroom.
The Little Rock Garden Club has given support to this project since its inception.  Heifer International joined Dunbar and formed a collaborative relationship. The garden was selected as one of the three finalists for the Garden Club of America "Founders Fund" Award in 2004 and 2018. Dunbar Garden was awarded $10,000 by the Garden Club of America as a finalist in 2018. The funds were used to create an outdoor teaching kitchen, enabling the garden to sponsor cooking demonstrations and various workshops open to the public throughout the year.  Also, vegetables, fruits and herbs grown in the garden are sold at a Wednesday market held at the garden growing season.
